about

A very old score for a film I composed in the late 90s, with creative contributions and performances from my scoring partners of that era, Gary Brown and James Woody (aka Pray for Rain). PRAIRE FIRE (later changed to STANDOFF) is a solid independent action film directed by Andrew Chapman that never really saw the light of day. The score still holds together, as one of my favorite dramatic-scores that I worked on from those days.

Largely a guitar-score that amazingly, apart from some gratuitous wah-wahing, is nearly bereft of embarrassing 90sisms. I'm still happy with the choices and the deliberate soundscape-y, guitar-mangling approach. Though created entirely in my home studio, it was sort of an in-between-time technologically, before I had lots of virtual instruments, and before I recorded and mixed everything in-the-box - so lots of banging on things, throwing of objects at prepared guitars and other sonic experimentation (plenty o hardware samplers too).

The score was completed in 4ish sleepless weeks, save one short cue. "Quote-Unquote Love Scene" was composed and added for a short scene shot and inserted after the film was supossedly in the can. In what can only be described as some quintessential, cliche Hollywood bullshit, at the last minute the studio suggested (demanded) that a lesbian love scene be added. Hottie of the moment Natasha Henstridge had a starring role in the film (she's quite good in this playing a non-hottie) and, presumably, the studio wanted to leverage her sexy status. So even though it couldn't have made less sense to the story, a flashback was concocted, a body double hired, and a cue was composed to address the studio's suggestion. Of course this afterthought didn't help the film's box-office one bit. It only served to make everyone involved feel icky....and to make a disposable story for this bandcamp paragraph perhaps.
